Therapy Session Discussion

Frequently Asked Questions

Starting therapy often comes with important questions—and we’re here to help. At Kaufman Counseling LLC in Clarks Summit, PA, we want individuals and families throughout the greater Scranton area to feel informed and confident about beginning counseling. Below you’ll find answers to some of the most common questions about our mental health services, scheduling, and what to expect from therapy. If you don’t see your question here, we invite you to contact us—we’re always happy to help guide you through the next step.

Q. What is counseling like?

A. Counseling is a supportive, non-judgmental space where you can talk openly about your thoughts, feelings, and experiences. Sessions are collaborative — we work together to understand what’s going on and develop tools that help you feel more grounded, confident, and empowered in your daily life.

Q. How do I know if therapy is right for me?

A. You don’t need to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. People come to counseling for many reasons — stress, anxiety, relationships, life transitions, parenting, grief, burnout, or simply wanting personal growth. If something has been weighing on you, therapy can be a helpful place to start.

Q. What happens in the first session?

A. The first session is a chance to get to know each other. We’ll talk about what brings you in, your goals, and answer any questions you may have. You’re never expected to share more than you feel comfortable with — we go at your pace.

Q. How long are sessions and how often do we meet?

A. Most sessions last about 50–55 minutes. Many clients begin with weekly sessions, then adjust frequency over time depending on their needs and progress.

Q. Do you offer in-person and virtual sessions?

A. We offer both in-person and telehealth appointments (when appropriate). Virtual sessions can be a flexible option for busy schedules, childcare needs, or increased comfort at home.

We can see any Pennsylvania resident via telehealth. You don't have to be a local resident to utilize our telehealth counseling services.

Q. Is what I say confidential?

A. Yes — your privacy is very important. Counseling is confidential with a few legal and safety exceptions, which will be explained clearly during your intake process.

Q. Do you accept insurance?

A. We accept most commercial insurances. We are unable to take Medicaid and Medicare at this time. We can help verify benefits and discuss fees before your first appointment so there are no surprises.

Q. What if I don’t know what my goals are yet?

A. That’s completely okay. Many people start therapy simply knowing they want things to feel different. We’ll work together to explore what matters most to you and define goals as we go.

Q. How do I schedule an appointment?

A. You can request an appointment through our website, call our office 570-290-7733, or send us a message. Our team will help match you with a therapist who fits your needs and preferences.

Q. What if I feel nervous about starting therapy?

A. Feeling nervous is very common — and completely understandable. Reaching out for support takes courage. Our goal is to create a welcoming, respectful space where you feel comfortable being yourself.
